Ontario: Keep blood-alcohol limit at .08: committee

A new report is recommending the legal blood-alcohol limit for drivers stay where it is.
Drivers who exceed the .08 limit — 80 milligrams of alcohol per 100 millilitres of blood — can be criminally charged.

Impaired driving is the No. 1 criminal cause of death in Canada, but the House of Commons justice committee says lowering the Criminal Code’s blood-alcohol limit would put undue strain on the already-limited resources of law enforcement.

The majority report says those resources are best directed at the most dangerous drivers who are already well above the legal limit.
It warns lowering the legal limit would also further stress an already burdened criminal justice system.

The committee says almost all provinces have lower blood-alcohol limits and accompanying licence suspensions that can get drunk drivers off the road.
A dissenting report by NDP justice critic Joe Comartin calls on Ottawa to reduce the limit to .05.
