Alberta: 2,829 unsafe drivers nabbed over long weekend

Members of the Alberta Sheriff Highway Patrol spent the Easter long weekend cracking down on unsafe drivers.
Between Thursday, April 9 and Monday, April 13, Sheriffs laid 2,074 charges across the province, including:

  • 1,703 speeding violations;
  • 31 seatbelt infractions;
  • 18 child restraint infractions;
  • 16 Gaming and Liquor Act violations;
  • 8 failing to stop at a stop sign infractions;
  • 46 other hazardous violations (e.g. careless driving, stunting); and
  • 252 non-hazardous violations (e.g. no insurance, suspended drivers).

Please note that we have recently written about similar situation about careless driving in Ontario.Sheriffs also helped remove 7 suspected impaired drivers from the road and arrested three people for outstanding arrest warrants.
Currently Sheriffs are working with RCMP traffic services on integrated traffic enforcement pilot projects in Whitecourt, Wetaskiwin, Olds and Airdrie. Sheriffs and RCMP laid 755 charges in those four areas including:

  • 598 speeding violations; and
  • 157 other Traffic Safety Act and Gaming and Liquor Act violations.

During the month of April, Sheriffs, RCMP and their road safety partners are focusing their safety message on the dangers of speeding. Speed significantly increases the number of fatalities and injuries that result from collisions. Speeding also reduces reaction times and contributes to increased risks of collisions.
Albertans are encouraged to let the Alberta Sheriff Highway Patrol know about traffic enforcement concerns such as speeders or aggressive drivers on our highways.
